Understanding Presbycusis: The Quiet Challenge of Aging

by | Dec 18, 2024 | Hearing Loss, Patient Resources

Hearing loss is often associated with aging and getting older and linked with fears of looking old if you need to wear (gasp!) hearing aids. These concerns do make sense; after all, age-related hearing loss, also known as presbycusis, is the number one cause of hearing loss across the globe.

Everyone at some point will deal with presbycusis – as we get older, our bodies naturally start to age with us, including our hearing. There’s no shame in dealing with hearing loss challenges.

We view hearing loss, no matter when or how you acquire it, as a sign of a well-lived life full of exciting social events, family gatherings, working hard, and partying just as hard for some. Hearing loss doesn’t mean you’re old but rather that you’ve heard so many great sounds that your ears are struggling to keep up.

Presbycusis is a natural effect of aging, and for some, it can be challenging to suddenly be dealing with hearing loss challenges unexpectedly. By understanding what’s going on inside your ears, you can be better equipped to seek care for your hearing and get back to hearing the life you love.

What Is Presbycusis?

Age-related hearing loss is increasingly common, affecting 80% of people ages 80 or older, and is the most common cause of hearing loss that happens quite naturally. As we get older, the fine hair cells in our inner ears, responsible for helping us hear and react to noise, stop functioning as well as they used to.

Presbycusis comes on slowly, and quite often one doesn’t notice the effects until someone else points it out. Have your loved ones mentioned you’ve been asking for repetition a lot or not hearing them when they call your name around the house?

Hearing loss of any kind can be disconcerting and isolating to deal with, and it can start to affect the rest of your holistic health as well; with links to balance disorders, cognitive decline, and an increased risk of dementia, presbycusis and other forms of hearing loss can cause some serious damage to more than your ears.

However, you don’t have to deal with your hearing loss challenges alone. With professional hearing care, you can optimize your hearing to the levels it was previously and enhance your listening capabilities like never before.

Concerned About Your Hearing?

Hearing care can fall by the wayside because many people associate it with getting old. Whether you need hearing aids or not, even just one hearing test can help you understand your current range of hearing capabilities and get to work on enhancing your hearing beyond what it was previously capable of.

If you’d like to get ahead of the curve and get your hearing tested sooner rather than later, our team is eager to assist in any way we can. Please don’t hesitate to request a callback to get in touch with us, and we’ll get in contact ASAP to answer questions and alleviate any concerns about your hearing.
