South Jordan began its development as farming families saw the flat floodplain of the river, which was easily irrigated by the west bluff and later the South Jordan Canal on the bluff above. Alfalfa and sugar beets were the foundation of our community’s economy until the 1980s when the demand for housing began to increase rapidly, transforming South Jordan into a bedroom community for Salt Lake City commuters.
